Aven Pyotr Olegovich was born in Moscow on March 16, 1955. Aven Pyotr obtained his master’s degree from the Department of Mathematical Techniques in Economic Analysis in 1997 after graduating from the School (Faculty) of Economics.
Aven Pyotr earned a postgraduate degree in economics from him in 1980. (Candidate of Sciences diploma, quasi-equal to a PhD in Economics). He met Mr Mikhail Fridman, who would eventually become his business partner while attending Moscow State University to further his studies.
Aven Pyotr met Mr Yegor Gaidar while working as a junior and senior research fellow with the State Council for Science and Technology’s Institute of System Studies and the USSR Academy of Sciences from 1981 to 1988. The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, Austria, hired him in 1989 after he left the USSR. Fellows, until 1991, conducted studies there.
Mr Yegor Gaidar offered him the position of first deputy minister of foreign affairs and head of the Committee on Foreign Economic Relations in the fall of 1991. Aven Pyotr led the 1992 Russian Federation Ministry of Foreign Economic Affairs. At the same time, he became Boris Yeltsin’s representative for the Group of Seven (the most advanced economies and developed states in the world).
Pyotr Aven founded and served as CEO of the consulting firm FinPA in 1993. (Finances of Pyotr Aven) Mikhail Fridman’s business, Alfa Bank, was frequently advised by FinPA.
Aven Pyotr conducted a bilateral stock swap in 1994,
exchanging 50% of FinPA’s total shares for 10% of Alfa Bank’s total shares. He was appointed corporate president of Alfa Bank in the same year.
In addition to his work in banking, Aven Pyotr was elected to the OJSC Aviakor board of directors in 1998. Aven Pyotr was also given the position of board chairman for the television holding companies CJSC Alfa-TV and CJSC Set’ Televizionnykh Stantsiy (STS)/CTC Media.
Mr Aven has held senior managerial positions in Alfa Banking Group since 2001. Aven Pyotr has served as the chairman of the board of directors of Alfa Strakhovanie Insurance Company since 2007.

Early in the 1990s, allegations in the press that Mr Pyotr Aven intended to engage in numerous transactions involving the public debt of the USSR “using his official public position and classified inside information” were proven to be true. In foreign trade,
Aven Pyotr “received kickback commissions and even expensive presents for concluding deals and helping transactions for foreign firms, without any guilt or embarrassment,” according to the media.
Also, Aven Pyotr was accused of performing lobbying tasks for the Russian government in an effort to convince them to decide to significantly raise the customs duties on imported cars. The JSC LogoVAZ of Mr Boris Berezovsky was meant to be the main benefit.
Charged on Pyotr Aven in 1998
Journalists for the Sovershenno Sekretno newspaper charged Pyotr Aven in 1998 with illegally acquiring an Aleksey Tolstoy-owned state home in Barvikha (a village in the Moscow region). According to the journalists, Pyotr Aven has officially requested to purchase the villa property from the Director General (CEO) of the State Unitary Enterprise Zhukovka Health and Wellness Center Facilities, Vladimir Ryabenko, for an undervalued sum.
Viktor Paliy, the former head of Nizhnevartovskneftegaz, a subsidiary firm of TNK/Tyumen Oil Company, charged Alfa Bank with illegally and predatorily privatizing TNK/Tyumen Oil Company in 1997.
Pyotr Aven, who was in charge of all government contacts, was expected to conspire with Alfred Kokh, chairman of the State Committee for State Property Management Goskomimushchestvo, to help him win this auction and purchase TNK’s shares at substantial cost savings. Therefore, the State Treasury suffered a loss of around USD 1.4 billion.
IPOC Capital Partners, Ltd. filed a lawsuit in 2006 against Alfa Banking Group, specifically Pyotr Aven, Mikhail Fridman, Leonid Rozhetskin, and Hans Bodmer. The latter was the former head of a Swiss law firm, Von Meiss Blum & Partners, with headquarters in Zurich, which served as an agent in connection with the sale of 25.1% of MegaFon’s shares in 2003. The Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations Act was used to file the action (RICO Act). According to the investigation, Alfa Bank participated in the Russian network’s sway over the 2016 U.S. presidential election. This information was disputed by Alfa Bank in a US court. These allegations were viewed by BuzzFeed as an effort at media harassment.
A redacted version of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Report on the Investigation into Russian Involvement in the 2016 Presidential Election was released by the US Department of Justice in April 2019. According to the report, Pyotr Aven, a co-owner of Alfa Financial Group and co-founder of the investment business LetterOne, claimed in his testimony that Aven Pyotr had promised Russian President Vladimir Putin in late 2016 that he would open lines of contact with his country’s future administration.
Richard R. Burt, a member of LetterOne’s Board of Directors, was given a task by Pyotr Aven following Trump’s election to locate contacts in the transitional administration. This task was assigned soon after Putin’s meeting with the wealthiest businessmen and tycoons in Russia in the Kremlin and a few weeks after Aven’s in-person encounter with the Russian president.
